To understand deck coatings and their potential longevity, we should first look at the main reasons deck coatings fail. UV rays from the sun damage the wood resulting in degradation of the wood cell structure. This breaks down the coating while causing the wood to oxidize (turn gray).
Rain, snow, and ice, followed by intense sun will set up a cycle that will cause damage to the wood by breaking down the exposed cellular structure. Freeze/thaw cycles will expand and contract the wood resulting in the stain “bond” with the wood cells to fail.
Mold, mildew, and algae begin to accrue on the surface leaving the wood unsightly, dirty and contributing to wood rot.
It's only a matter of time when wood goes unprotected.
" I thought our deck was beyond hope. All I can say is Wow! Thanks for a job well done! "
Randy Dye, Forest Virginia
Decks and other wooden structures are beautiful additions to our homes, where families gather to entertain, dine, and relax after a busy day.
But the bitter truth is, that wooden structures begin to deteriorate from the moment they are built. Intense Sun & Rain set up a vicious cycle of expansion and contraction that do damage to unprotected wooden structures, like what we see here.
Think of yourself in the sun for a long summer with no sun screen, and you can begin to get the idea.
